frozen central ac coil

wondering if I could get some help here.....I just noticed my central AC was not very cool. It was set to 69 and it was 76 in the house. I went into the basement and noticed that it looked like the coil may be frozen (ice on line coming from unit) I then checked my filter and saw that it was VERY clogged.
I changed the filter and shut down the AC for now. My question is this...will the coil thaw and be OK tomorrow, now that it has a clean filter, or do you think it's now broken??? I'm a licensed electrician and have a very extrensive electrical backgroud but no AC experience.

Help me please.

Should be ok but you won't know for sure until you start it up and it has a heavy heat load to contend with.

well..I'm going to keep it off all night long (and suffer for a while) and then turn it on in the morning. Should that be enough time??

More than enough especially if you run the indoor fan.
