It's entirely possible that something crawled into the back area of the unit and died, so a thorough cleaning is in order. The real small units [5000/7000 btuh range] have to be completely removed and have the cover taken off [about a bizillion screws] in order to gain access to the insides. Started at about 9000 btuh they are a slide out chassis design. You slide the unit out of the shell [wear your old clothes, put something down on the floor to protect and be prepared to get wet], take it outside and clean it. Get an alkaline type [not an acid type] foaming action coil cleaner and a hand spray bottle. Wet down the coils and spray the cleaner into them and let sit for a while, then thoroughly rinse and let the unit COMPLETELY dry out in the sun before reinstalling. Be sure to check to blower wheel for dirt buildup, sometimes you have to scrape the dirt out of each blade with a screwdriver. Rubber gloves and some eye goggles or a face mask are a good idea.
