Compressor runs with Thermostat off

Someone please help me! When I have the switch (Heat-Off-Cool) on my thermostat turned off, if the temperature in the house rises above the set point, the compressor and condensor fan run. The fan at the furnace stays off. This, of course, causes eveything to freeze up. If I raise the thermostat set point, the compressor and fan shut off. Is this a thermostat problem or a problem at the condensor?

Thanks for any help offered!

Bob

It sounds like the thermostat to me. When you replace it, avoid the off brands like Hunter, Lux, etc. Stick to Honeywell, White-Rogers. Make a sketch of which color wire is on which terminal and change them over one at a time.

The thermostat is not new and has not been replaced. I believe it is a Honeywell, old style small squareish housing with a round dial. It is possable that the thermostat too a hard hit as someone walked down the hall and tripped over the dog. **** that hurt!

Thanks again for your help!

Pull the R wire off the tstat . If it all stops get a new one.
Wal-mart has them here get a T87 with a Q539subbase. be sure and mark down the colors of the wires so you put them back the same way.
