A/C for garage
Have a 4 ton new trane heat pump and going to have it installed in my 800 sq ft workshop, soon to be insulated.
I know this is overkill but the unit is now free.
What do u think.

Wow! That is way OVERSIZED!
Your system is going to run on and off on short cycle.. With short cycle in cooling your shop is going to be damp since it can't run enough to dry out the air.
Did the dealer do a heat lost/gain on the shop? I would say your are almost best to do a wall/window unit vs a split system.
Ask the dealer for a print out of the heat lost/gain on your shop.
How did you get this for free? ??

Really, even for free it isn't much of a bargain.
Like Jay said it won't run long enough to dehumidify which is half the job an ac does.
Also, you may have the breaker tripping because of short cycling, the evap coil will freeze up due to low cooling load and the compressor oil will likely become trapped in the evaperator coil due to low refrigerant velocity.
There's more, but I think this might be reason enough to maybe find a different way of cooling your garage.
How about a window unit, they are pretty cheap.
