To use or not to use

I have 2 A/C units in my house. 1 for upstairs and 1 for down. I rarily use the upstairs. Is it more energy efficient to just turn the upstairs unit off or better to run it at a higher temp setting than downstairs? Our house is very open and you can definately feel the hot blanket of air as you go upstairs if we do not run the A/C. Will the hot air keep the colder downstairs air from rising and keep it cooler downstairs? Thanks for your help.

2 units

The hot air upstairs will make the downstairs unit work harder. That being said, it is still probably more cost efficient just to run the downstairs. This is one of those balancing acts that just takes experimentation. Running the upstairs, even at a higher temp will help to dehumidify the upstairs. There is likely some ideal temperature for the upstairs unit in order to help the downstairs & still save costs. What that temperature is, is anybody's guess. Too many variables.
