Question HELP!!! Compressor Question

If the compressor is out, will it keep cold air from blowing out of the vent. I have been having problems out of my ac unit in my apartment for almost two weeks. Maintenance has been there everyday this week and still have not fixed the problem. They have fixed a leak, cleaned the coils, replaced the filter and added freon. None of this has seemed to fix the problem. Any ideas on what may be wrong. I have decided that I am going to call a HVAC tech today and take the bill to the rental office.

If compressor is not working/running, you will not get cold air-only air usually close to the temp where the air handler or furnace blower is located. You should be able to tell if the compressor is working by going out to the location of your outside AC condensor and listening. If outside AC condensor is working correctly, big copper line should be cold and wet and small line should be warm. Sounds like you need a different tech to look at your unit.

Good Luck!

You may want to check with building management before having anyone look at it. Let them know the problems you're having and that you would like the number for corporate headquarters so that maybe they can get something done.

It would be unlikely that even the worst tech would add refrigerant to a system whose compressor was not running. It is impossible to know whether the system is low or how much would be required if the compressor is not running. So I would assume that the compressor is running but there are plenty of other things that could be wrong.

I totally agree with Matt. It is clear on this HVAC forum that some maintenance people for condos/apt complex's are just that-maintenance maybe but really not HVAC qualified much less certified!
