sg985,
A couple of ideas for the average homeowner.
1.Keep air filters changed/cleaned regularly.
2.Keep evaporator coil cleaned
3.Keep AC condenser(outside unit) cleaned and free from any air flow obstructions such as shrubs-at least 18-24"
4.Listen to your system during the start-up at beginning of AC season.
5.It seems homeowners don't call an HVAC service dealer until a problem arises or just ignore a problem/symptom until situation results in breakdown of some kind. AC systems require some attention from time to time and depending on age I would recommend a PM checkup every 2-3 yrs.
I am sure there are other suggestions from other forum members.
