help needed buying new Condenser fan motor for central Air
I bought a house a few months ago and everything was perfect until I tried to turn on the Central Air and it just made a humming noise outside at the unit and it heated up a lot. It would make a click when the unit was turned on the condenser fan motor would not start. I deduced that the motor must be at fault and even tried to push start it to no avail.
I looked up online information about my unit and couldn't really find the motor I was looking for(but I am not really sure exactly what I am looking for). I called a specialist in and he said the condenser fan motor was bad and that it would have to be replaced, and that would cost between $600-$800.
I see online that most motors are under $100 and I am mechanically inclined, well I am professional mechanic and know that I could install it.
the problem that I am having is locating the correct motor.
here is the one I took out.-
MagneTek
Ser. 15G 81334J Mod. HE3F34ON'
1/6 HP 208-230volts 60htz 1amp.
the spindle is 2" long and 1/2" in diameter.
it is about 5 1/2" in diameter and attaches to the "grill" with 4 nuts.
the spindle is downfacing
I keep on finding ones with longer spindles or higher horsepower, like 1/5 or 1/4hp. Will the higher horsepower ones work, but just less effeciently? Do I just cut down the longer spindle? anything else I should be looking for?
anyhelp would be greatly appreciated, I am here sweating in Philadelphia, forcast today 91*(with humidity 100*).
thanks
joel

You need to check direction of rotation.
does the motor housing need to be drip proof, water tight.
some motors state the capacitor size, you may need to check and get the right cap for the new motor.
Is it a one speed or two speed motor, something speed.
RPM ?
" humming noise outside "
I would check the pump if it runs First.

got a new motor, grainger recommended a local retail motor store. I also got a new capacitor, but it is two prong rather than the original three.
I mounted the fan blade the way it came off, I labeled it.
I was wondering-
what to do about the capacitor , it is not labeled in any way?
btw, the motor is an exact match of the one that came out.
