i had a tech say i needed a hard start kit b/c the compressor wasn't coming on in our outside a/c unit. so instead of spending $85 with him i bought a $21 part myself, installed it, but the compressor still doesn't come on. i can hear it start to buzz like it's trying, but that stops after a couple seconds. is it possible that the capacitor needs to be replaced, or maybe i need a different size hard start kit? our unit has 2 capacitors and i was told to put the kit on the larger one. any help would be appeciated... my wife's 9 months pregnant here in atlanta and now our a/c is out!!! man it's hot! thanks

I have a 10 year old, 1300 sq ft house in Las Vegas. Last few days have been hot (115+). My compressor died and was replaced with a 3.5 ton 10 SEER American Standard unit. The new unit is doing a poor job of bringing indoor temps down at a reasonable rate. Old unit (3 or 3.5 ton York), could easily bring indoor temps down 5-6 degrees in 30-45 minutes during the peak of the day, The new unit is bringing temps down at a rate of 1-2 degrees per hour during peak of day. I've been told that there should be a 20 degree split between the air coming out of the register and room temp. Is this correct? When the thermostat is set for 76-78 degrees, the air coming from the register is only 64-65 degrees. When tech installed unit it was charged with 3 lbs of r22 and checked for leaks with no problems noted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
