Bad Contactor or do you tell??

We are having a problem with the outside unit. At times when the indoor unit kicks on, the compressor comes on with no problem. Other times if you just bang on the unit it kicks on. If that doesn't work, you can manually push in the contactor or relay (not sure which is what) and the compressor runs fine. Today it has really been acting up. If you manually depress it, it starts up, but then kicks right back off. When the compressor is coming on properly, the unit works great, nice and cold. I am hoping that one of you guys can point me in the right direction as far as trying some do it yourself things before calling a tech.

Thanks in advance for any help,

If you have a multi-meter you need to check voltage at the 2 small wires on the side of the contactor with it calling for cooling. If you have around 24 volts and it's not pulling in then replace the contactor.
