Compressor drawing more amps than should

I had my furnance checked for the winter and the tech checked the A/C unit and said the compressor was drawing between 8-11.4 amps, double what it should. Said the unit may not make it through next summer.

Is he correct? Does it mean the unit will eventually fail?

Thanks

That doesn't make sense. One half of 8-11.4 is 4 to 5.7 amps. That's a mighty small compressor. Is it a 1 ton compressor ?

He did not check the charge, and it is a 1-ton compressor. small builders grade.

High running amps could mean a bad compressor. But there are other causes which include; overcharged system, bad/weak capacitor, low line voltage, or dirty condenser coils. Everything else needs to be checked before the compressor is condemned. Also, these conditions left uncorrected will shorten compressor life.
Waiting until the compressor burns out is not such a good idea because of the possibility of system contamination.

Thanks for that info, the tech just said the unit should be replaced. Easy way tomake money. I will have the unit properly checked to see what is going on.

On the condensing unit is a label. Post the model #, Serial #, and it may have "RLA" for the compressor.
