Central air won't turn on

And the fan won't go on when I turn it on manually. But if I turn the heat on with the fan in auto, the heat and fan turn on and run fine.

I checked the breaker in the basement, it is ok, and there is some kind of fuse box outside, which looks ok. I don't see anywhere to reset anything outside. It is a Trane 1000xp I think.

Any ideas of simple things to try? I really don't have the tools or background to do anything major. It seems odd that nothing happens at all. Maybe try a new thermostat? I could probably handle that.

If your fan comes on only on auto it might be that your T-stat is bad, I take it that if you put the fan on the on position it won't come one?

2 things

yes, I turn the fan ON, and it does not come on. But it runs in auto with the heater. It is a gas furnace. I just had the thermostat replaced a year or two ago.
