air conditioner and furnace replacement

My air conditioner went out this week, it's approx 13yrs old and the company I called recommended they replace the funace as well. It this necessary? What are the reasons for this? The furnace is the same age.

Furnace & A/C

If the furnace is over 15-20 years old, I would say to go ahead & replace it at the same time as the A/C. They may also be suggesting furnace replacement in order to fit the new evaporator coil for the A/C. Many older furnaces are too tall to properly fit the new coils which are much taller than the old ones.

My air conditioner is 19 yrs old... in apartment... still works okay though (most inefficient appliance around, however).
