I live in Central Florida and am about to replace the A/C in the house. The prices I've received for a heat pump vs. straight cool system are very close. Considering I don't use the heat very much but the air conditioning a lot, which system is better for me? (The house is not very well insulated so when I do use the heat it needs to pack a punch).

If your total heating days for the year are few, then I would go with straight a/c and resistance heat. This is just my opinion, and you will probably get several more opinions that will go either way. My feeling is that straight a/c has fewer parts and will be easier and cheaper to repair. Electric heat is very reliable and again, easy to repair.

You dont say how far down you are in Fl there Id say from about Orlando on up I go with a heat pump. but from about Tampa and melbourne down .Id go with the AC and electric element heat. Any way Id go for the SEER 15 and put in a V/S blower with a humidistat on the unit. A hot water recovery unit for sure. thats free hot water for about 8 months down there And it kicks up the seer of the ac unit also. For sure down there get 3 bids for the job.
I just put in about 25 years down in WPB .Stay with R 22 it will be made till 2030
