Please Help (Compressor Electrical Inop)

I just got home and realized the house was unnaturally warm. I went upstairs and checked the thermostat its set for 77 but the temp is 85. I then went out to the breaker box and the breaker for the compressor was off. It wont allow me to reset it. Any advice would be very welcome.

When you say "it won't allow me to reset it", what do you mean? The correct procedure for resetting a breaker is to move it to the "off" position and then turn it to the "on" position. If it immediately trips again, you have a short somewhere between the breaker and including the compressor. If on the other hand, the breaker handle feels loose, doesn't move, or smells burnt, you likely have a bad breaker.

If you are comfortable working around high voltage, we can help you diagnose further.
