Central A/C doesn't blow cold air

When the A/C turns on, I hear the air blowing. But, it is not as cold as it used to be. When I check the outside compressor unit, I see the fan running continuously. But, I hear something (compressor?) coming on briefly (5-10s) and intermittently.

The unit is close to 4 years old (made by Trane; not sure about the model). Any suggestions on what went wrong would be helpful before I call a contractor.

You can have lots of ifs Ifs here. Compressor capacitor bad Low on freon. Compressor bad . Sounds like it is comeing on and off on the klixon. 4 years old call the the company that put it in . Should have a 5 year warranty on the compressor. Turn it off for sure. You can let the inside fan run

That seems to describe a compressor that is having a hard time starting and is kicking off on overload. Take a picture of the control panel area with the capacitors and post some. If there is a extra capacitor in there (hard start kit) make sure and include those pics. Get a close up of the capacitors top and sides we are looking for any bulging or abnormalities. Probably just a bad capacitor I would replace that first before I did much else.

Help diagnosing issue with trane xe1000 this weekend

Hey. I'm new to this forum but tried to do some reading and a little trouble shooting on my own before posting. Unit is operating again and weather is nice a cool now but don't want to wait until it stops working during another hot (or cold) spell. The unit is only about 6 years old. Did not notice any blockage of the coils or enough accumulated crap inside to be shorting anything out. Btw, I'm sure I'll reveal in the info below that I did some really stupid newbie type move but please be gentle ... I was trying to be careful but still sometimes act a little too quickly. I'm in VA and it's been pretty hot until recently but this weekend was quite cool. Hadn't been outside yet or would've opened the windows and killed the AC but since I hadn't the AC was running but blowing warm air. So ... I'll just kind of bullet list what I did as a result and see if it maybe provides enough info for someone to give me an idea what I've got going on. Checked the furnace filter and it was clean and no freezing around it. Went outside and saw the trane heat pump unit wasn't running. Checked circuit breaker in the main box (in the house) and it had, in fact, tripped. Since the weather was cool and the unit shouldn't have been working to hard this concerned me. Flipped the breaker back on and went outside and unit was running with no obvious issues. Right as I was crossing my fingers and walking back into the house (after about 5-10 minutes) heard reasonably loud 'pop' from inside the unit and the breaker tripped again (inside breaker again). Turned the outside breaker switch off (it had never tripped) and pulled the top of the unit off to see if there were any obvious issues. Neither the fan nor the compressor felt hot to the touch. I left the outside breaker off but turned the inside ones back on. Very carefully held the top of the unit so that the fan couldn't catch on anything but I could see inside the unit and flipped the outside breaker. Compressor and fan started normally. Turned breaker back off and back on again and no issue. Tried it the third time and no dice and the outside breaker did not want to stay on but and the unit did not seem like it was 'trying' to do anything when I'd switch it on. Came back in the house and did some more searching on this forum. Wanted to try to eliminate a couple of possibilities so got a pen and paper and digital camera, some tools and electrical tape. Jotted down the connections (btw ... between all of the unwiring and rewiring I was killing the overall power to the system) for the fan/top of unit and popped those off. Took the fan/top off. I realize that the different pieces of the system might 'talk' to each other and prevent the system from firing up if something is disconnected but figured I'd try to see if the breaker (outside) would still trip with the fan off. It did. Next wanted to see if breaker would trip with no load on it at all. Killed all breakers then disconnected the wires going to the unit and put a little electrical tape on the ends just to make sure I didn't get distracted and do something stupid(er). Outside breaker did not trip with nothing connected to it (I have no idea if this was a useful test but was just trying to get as many data points as I could). Connected the power back to the unit and once again the breaker does trip (outside one ... after turning inside stuff back on). Power back off and since it's hard to get to and see took a digital picture of the wires going into the compressor so I know where to put things back and disconnected them. This time the outside breaker did not trip when turned on (no fan attached, no compressor attached). At this point my tiny brain was concerned that this may mean the compressor was bad but the fact that in none of these cases anything seemed to 'try' to work before the breaker tripped seemed odd to me. Hooked compressor back up. Turned power on, flipped breaker and the compressor made a little noise but didn't start .... outside breaker did not trip. Hooked fan back up. Turned power power on and flipped outside breaker. Everything fired back up and sounded normal to my ear. It was actually fairly chilly yesterday so had to turn the thermostat way down but left things running for about 30 minutes and the vents were blowing icy air and nothing turned off. Have done several quick tests since then and notice nothing odd ... but once again, it's pretty chilly right now so it's only running if I turn the temp way down. Sorry my first post is such a long one but figure too much info is better than too little. I'm hoping that it's just the capacitor (that thing is there to handle the initial surge of power the compressor needs when firing up right??) since that seems like a pretty easy fix. Anyway, thanks to any of the experts out there that might have some advice or any suggestions for anything else I can do to better test than what I came up with based on very little knowledge. A/C Blows cool air very strong for about 1 hour than barely blowing.

I have 3 year home with a Carrier A/C unit. I don't not have the specific specs on the unit. The problem I am having is that the A/C unit start blowing cool air very strong for a very short time. After a while the air flow gets very weak. It is still cool but very very weak. I've also notice that when this happens the pipes going into the house have a little ice on the outside. Like they are frozen. The problem started 3 days ago. The A/C was working like a champ until one day the house stopped getting cool. Details i've noticed: 1) Fan/Unit outside home runs. 2) I've changed the filters in the house. 3) I've let the pipes unfreeze for 1 full day. ( i then turn it back on and saem thing happens) 4) Unit in garage has water in the drain pan. (its never done this before) 5) if i turn on the the fan by itself the air flow is very strong and never gets weak. It only gets weak when the A/C is on.
