AC Compressor Noise

Hi,
I have a 3 Ton Carrier compressor that's REALLY loud. We had someone come take a look and they say there's something he called a "jacket" that I could cover the compressor itself to muffle the noise.

The way he explained it, it would fit inside the unit, directly attached to the compressor itself.

Wouldn't that keep air from the fan from cooling the compressor unit? Is this something normally used to reduce compresssor noise? Is this safe?

Thanks for any suggestions

Compressor blankets are ok to use and come standard on higher end units. The air that goes through the unit is just to expell heat from the condensor coil and that's it. The compressor is cooled by the refrigerant returning from the evaporator.

If the compressor noise has gotten worse over time then there might be a problem that needs to be addressed.

The blanket will lower the noise level, but you might be worring about a symptom of a more serious problem.

Compressor changeouts are very expensive.
