There are registers that bring warm air into the rooms from the furnace, they have adjustable vanes; these are supply registers (or diffusers). That how rooms get heated.
Then there are the other kind, the ones that carry the cool room air back to the furnace to be reheated, they do not have vanes (the grid is not adjustable/movable); these are return grilles (people call them registers, but this is incorrect, a misnomer)
