a/c dirty sock odor

Just turned on the central a/c for the first time in 6 months and am smelling a mild dirty sock odor. Have owned the home for 2 years and never smelled it before, either with heating or cooling.

I've heard of the "bacteria growing on the coils or in drain pan" issue and was just wondering if this is typically the source of the odor, and whether or not this requires professional cleaning.

Appreciate any input!
