A/C not working properly

Hello everyone,

After letting the A/C rest for the winter, I turned it on this weekend and we noticed that the air is moving through the vents; however, it is not cooling at all. I checked the unit outside, and the fan is running OK but there is a buzzing noise coming on and off sporadictly. Any ideas?

Thanks,

The compressor may be trying to start, makes the buzzing noise while at it; is unable to do so and within a few seconds the overload switch gets hot and turns the compressor OFF. After a few more seconds the overload cools-off, its contacts close and the compressor tries to re-start again...buzzing again...etc...etc.

If this is what is happening, you may have one of the following:
1- a burned-out compressor
2- a shorted compressor capacitor
3- a disconnected wire to the compressor or capacitor terminals

If you have a multimeter and know how to use it, and if you are familiar with electricity (and how dangerous it could be messing with it if you're a novice), you may want to test the above named components.
