Modify filter size

Hey all,

I have a Rheem unit that uses an air handler equiped with a 16x21 filter. The Rheem has a permanent plastic washable filter that does not work so well . It has one mesh screen as a filter. I replaced it with a washable filter that you cut down to size and have been using it for several months. I want to get into using disposable filters but trying to find a 16x21 is impossible. Custom order only.

Now 16x20 is available in every store. The filter is located at the bottom of the air handler with the air flow coming up. So the filter just rests in a track below the coil. Can I simply nail/caulk a 1 inch wood strip of wood inside the air handler frame where the filter goes so that I can use a 16x20 filter?

If needed I could look up the tonnage to determine the minimum filter size needed as I read in a few posts while researching this. But I dont know how much a differnce 16 sq. inches will make.

Another option, do they make an adaptor that is 16x21 that you can fit a 16x20 filter in to (dumb question maybe )

Go ahead and do the 16 by 1 strip as you said and put that into the back, that way you don't have to remove it every time you replace the filter.

When you do put in a new filter, I'd suggest you use the lower MERV filter like at Home Depot, called Natural Aire, sold in a 3 pack for about $8.

Anything with a higher MERV will be harder on the equipment.
