Fan running, compressor not coming on

If I turn my air on it will cool for a couple hours then it just gets hotter and hotter in the house. What I noticed is that the fan outside is turning but I don't here that buzz turning on which I think is the compressor. If the compressor is not coming on why is it cooling for a few hours? What could the problem be?

Compressor is likely overheating and shutting itself off on safety (they have an internal safety switch called the "Thermal Overload").

Why does it cool off at the beginning?
At the beginning the compressor is cool so the contacts of the overload are closed, allowing the compressor to run. As the time goes by, the motor picks up heat, so much so that the safety trips.

Have it professionally inspected as it could be a number of things, amongst which is an "undercharge of refrigerant".
