Oil/refrigerant migration?

Hello, recently I overheard a Sears sales associate tell a customer "leave that a/c turned off and upright in the window for about a day before running to let the oil settle". After going home I did some Google searches, and found that oil/refrigerant can migrate out of the compressor and cause damage if the a/c is fired up without any oil or refrigerant in the compressor.

My question is, how much time does the oil take to reach the compressor after being set upright? I never heard about this before, but it makes sense.

I think many people probably store their units on their side, and when they need them they just pop them right in their window without letting the oil reach the compressor.

Having central air I don't know a great deal regarding window air units, but water coolers which utilize compressors also need to be sat upright for 24 hrs or so before switching the compressor on - I suppose this is the same principle.
