ac unit makes horrrible loud sound

My A/C as of yesterday moring decided to all of sudden make this horrible sounding noise. Sounds like a very loud squeal. I have no idea what going on, but whenever i switch it on to cool, the noise comes back. So i let it rest by turning it off, went to work, came back and it was running fine for about 5 hours or so, then again the noise came back. This noise only goes away if the unit is off of cool. any help would be useful. if you need any additional info please do not hesitate to ask.

The belt that drives the squirrel cage blower is slipping.
If you tighten it the squeal will stop but the belt will soon break.
New belt!

Oil the motor while you're at it.
If the oil holes are inconveniently located, put a skinny wire into each and then put drops of oil on the wire. The drops will follow the wire down or sideways, whatever is necessary.

Belt? On a home A/C air handler? Maybe I missed something, but sounds more like the bearings in the motor are dry. See if there are caps for adding oil, but I'd be getting the specs off the motor in the air handler and looking for a replacement.
