A/C Damper: Only downstairs cools

Let me first say I do not know much on this subject but am looking for help.

We have two programmable thermostats - one upstairs and one downstairs. Something happened where the a/c only works downstairs and not upstairs.

Ok - so we called a tech out and they said we needed a new damper.

This may be a huge question but is this something that my husband can read up on and fix it?

Or if a professional fixes it, what would be a ballpark figure? We were quoted $3600.

It sounds like you have a single HVAC unit that is zoned and the zone damper has died. You may have a old system and they are having to replace the damper and controls since they cannot match the parts??, if not then the price seems a bit expensive. Better get 2 more quotes heck someone may find that a wire is simply loose somewhere?

Thank you. I hope to be able to relay this information. This does give me some peace of mind as I think we may have an old damper.
