general question on split systems

If an air conditioner residential split system-- not a heat pump-- is completely ignored and simply allowed to do its thing summer after summer, where will the most likely point of eventual failure be? I guess I'm asking about the weakest link.

If you're talking about the entire HVAC system, then I'd say the air filter. It will, depending on the type, plug, restrict your airflow, then your freeze your coil.

Lack of cleaning of the A-coil can lead to restricted air flow/organism growth. Lack of removing debris from the condensor can reduce airflow over those coils as well, and extra heat usually equates to extra stress on a system.

Echoing Codyy, the first thing to die will be the compressor.

Not only will dirty filters and evap coil cause stress, the dirty outdoor coil will also stress the "Prime Mover". The compressor will eventually die.
