a/c and tax rebate?

The a/c system in my house qualifies as an antique (early '70's). We are considering replacing it before it is an emergency & the $1500 tax rebate is pushing us towards it as well. Our HVAC company that we have dealt with for several years tells us that the new system must be 16 seer & since we live in the NorthEast, that is not very common. The 2 brands he is getting us prices on is Heil & Thermopride, but he cannot get 16 seer in Thermopride. What I am wondering is does the $1500 tax rebate REALLY matter or is the 16 seer really overkill? Our house is a ranch and 2250 square feet. Thanks for the advice. Jina

My two cents! Electric rates will keep rising! Now is the time to get the $1500 from the gov before they tax it ( that will be a hole other post). Some 15 seer units will get you the money. Trane 15 seer will qualify.
