Unhappy A/C no cool, fans running, Trane XL19i

I got home from work tonight to an 86 deg, warm, muggy home. The fan is blowing, just not cooling.

The outside unit runs when I turn the A/C back on. Makes the normal initial pop sound and will ramp up to try to cool it down.

Filters aren't newly replaced but still look clean. Outside grills don't seem to have any debris clogging them.

In the "old days", we'd assume the freon was low. I don't even know how that works now with the newer models. I think this has R-22.

The unit was installed in 2005. It is a Trane XL19i.

Your thoughts? I'm in Texas and it is 87 deg inside and 90 something outside but with the breeze, it feels cooler out there. This is not the time of year to be without A/C.

Thank you

Hot in TX

Are you sure the compressor is running? And if it is not you may have a bad capacitor. If you feel comfortable you could take the control box cover off and look at it, many times the failure is visibly apparent by swelling/leaking oil. Beyond that I would call for help.

If your compressor is running, then it may be as you said, the freon is low.
