A/C Return Vent Clearnace

Will be moving into a new home shortly and just realized that there is an A/C Return Vent in our bedroom right where we planned to put a dresser. Will it severely impact the A/C efficiency if we place the dresser in front of the A/C return vent as we had planned? How much clearance should we allow between the return and the back of the dresser to ensure sufficient outgoing air flow.

Thanks.

The clearance you need would depend on the size of the filter. A standard 20x30 filter would need 6 inches of clearance for the surface area of the filter to match the surface area of the unblocked surrounding air. As a general rule you should hear no difference in the sound of the moving air when you put the object in front of the return. If the sound changes at all you have restricted the airflow.
