Should I/Do I need to oil my outside condenser motor?

Just replaced old 1/8 HP 1075 RPM GE with new GE 1/3 HP 1075 RPM motor cause old one (1986!!!) finally died.

New one does not have motor manual or suggested maintenance if any. It does have 2 small holes and one gets a black plastic plug in it depending on how it is mounted.

I believe that holes is for oiling?

It sounds like a drain hole. Is it on the end bell?

There are 2 holes...one on each end. The instructions say to be sure the black plastic plug, which is automatically pushed into one of the holes, is plugged into whichever hole is facing UP...as in...towards the elements or is exposed, etc.

So I did as instructed but reading a post from an A/C related website...there was a comment that mentioned using it for occasional oiling. I have no such instructions. just curious.

Did you download and read the brochure? Those are drain holes. Condensor fan motors usually do not have oil ports. What I don't understand is why you went up so high on the horsepower rating?

I didn't pick the motor. The HVAC company I bought it from recommended it to me. They knew the exact specs I had and I specifically requested a correct replacement.

It runs very well...but at times it seems like it is going to take off like a helicopter!

Hi, I'm a maintenance person for a newspaper. We have four 15 ton carrier split systems for the building. I keep up on the general maintenance; filters, coils, etc. Today one of the units isn't really cooling. The rooftop unit is running, I can see the freon flowing through the sight glass, filters are clean and I just did all the coils both in and outside about a month ago. The area that is being cooled has some cool air coming out but also seems stuffy. I checked the outside intake and the damper is shut. I don't want to have to call in a tech if I don't have to. This is more of a what should I do question. Whole House A/c is about 20 years old and does not cool the house enough. Another problem is that we made an addition to the house which is about a 13 by 13 ft room. I tied into the lines that ran into the other bedrooms and ran one line from one room to the restroom. Cut another line from another room and ran it to the 13 by 13 ft room. The restroom does seem to get cool but the other room not at all. Tomorrow I have two a/c companies coming out for an estimate to replace the a/c unit. I don't know what to do. Should the whole unit be replaced or maybe fixed. Just instead install a room a/c for the 13 by 13 room? I have to use my credit card for all this (Since I don't have the money to pay cash) Should I maybe seal the lines where I tied into and install the room a/c. The temperature here in California has been above 100. Any help would be so appreciated. Thank you so much.Read More
