AC dead any ideas at all welcome.

The outside unit does nothing. I put a new dual cap in even though the old one looked like new. Full power to the contactor. I push the contactor in - nothing. Neither the fan or the compressor starts. Carrier 2 ton. 10 years old. Is there something else that would keep both of them from firing up????

You're measuring 240-V to the contatactor, right? What voltage is getting past the contactor to the two motors?

The contactor may have a burned contact or a bug stuck between them.

240v coming in to line side of contactor, you push contactor in and nothing happens, replace contactor.

Thanks you guys you were right!! I got a test meter and did a thorough test. The contactor was shot. I replaced it just last year. I took it a part and it was not that chewed up. But the new one worked like a charm. I bought an extra one. Less than $30 for the two. To me it shows the value of a good test meter.

burglar-proofing thru the wall unit?

How do you do that? I had older units i replaced in the past few years but someone made me realize that all you have to do is push them in and you are in. My one i actually had to make the hole bigger by 2 inches and chipped out concrete block to do so but the other one i used my old AC sleeve and just slid this new one in. That sleeve was in there so tight i couldnt get it out if i wanted to so i figured hey it's in there why not let it be? I'm assuming i should brace/bracket into the wall somehow but that seems really intrusive and ugly lookingRead More

Compressor stopped temporarily

Here are my symptoms, which are close to, but not exactly the same as other posts I have read... During a thunderstorm last night, I noticed that a buzzing noise was coming from my coolant line in the basement. Sounded like someone had replaced my A/C compressor with my noisy little pancake air compressor. An hour later, the noise was gone, but so was the cooling. Duct trunk was room temperature, coolant return line wasn't even slightly warm. Outside, the fan was blowing full speed, compressor was silent. I thought maybe a momentary loss of power earlier had stunned the compressor into an auto-protect mode, so I tried flipping off the breaker, pausing, and flipping it back on. No change. Next I thought that the delay switch may have gone bad, as the last one did back in 2002. About 90 minutes later, however, I noticed that the compressor had come back on. The duct trunk was cold, the line was warm (but not hot), and I could hear both the compressor running and the coolant flowing in the lines. This morning, the weather has cooled off considerably, so the thermostat is not calling for cooling. I turned down the temp just to test, and the compressor came on as normal. Is it possible that the delay board is going, but not yet gone? That wouldn't explain the buzzing, though, would it? Could the power dip have damaged the compressor?
