Trane xl14i heat pump motor question
My 5 year old Trane heat pump model xl14i quit the other night here in the heat of texas
. I went out and saw the fan not turning so I tried pushing it with a stick and it was very tight.
Shut system down and called the service company the next morning.
The service guy verified my hunch and said a new motor and some capacitor would need replaced parts needed to be ordered.
He did get the old motor to work by putting some lube on the shaft and working it free.
He also stated that because we skipped a season of there service contract it might not be covered under the 10 year warranty. I had them do a service 3 months ago and all was good. I also know that the motor is a maintenance free sealed bearing type and upon watching past inspections the techs never oiled the motor.
My question is could they not honer the warranty because I skipped a season?
They are going to cover the bill this time.

If you press them they will usually cover it. I mean why not? The motor costs them probably less than forty dollars and they have be collecting money for basically nothing by doing "mandatory maintenances" for years. Extended warranties are the biggest scam and a huge cash cow for businesses, even bigger than the basic manitenance contracts IMO.
