I presume you are looking for quality ratings -- which manufacturers are good/better/best, etc? If so, there are a lot of opinions, but ratings are a whole different story.
Most major manufacturers such as Carrier, American Standard, Lennox, and York build other brands in addition to their flagship brand. Sometimes the other brands are clones, other times there are significant differences.
The biggest factor governing the performance of any HVAC equipment is a [B]good installation[B]. The HVAC equipment must be properly sized for your home, and the ductwork needs to be checked to see if its adequate. The most expensive brand will probably be disappointing if its installed poorly, and by the same token, a lesser brand may perform great for years if it was sized and installed properly, and regularily maintained.
You should always get at least three bids before you purchase any major HVAC equipment and ask that the contractors perform a Manual J calculation, which more accurately determines the size of the equipment needed. Your installer should also ask you what your budget is, how long you plan to remain in your home, etc, and armed with that information, should be able to present you with a couple of options for recommended equipment. Most HVAC contractors represent more than one equipment manufacturer and can bid various options for you.
