New Central AC -- Goodman? Lenox? Other?

My fathers 25 year old central AC unit just died (great summer timing!) and he's had a few folks down to give repair/replace estimates. He's decided to replace replace the system versus starting costly repairs to the old system. The house is about 1,500 square feet in Massachusetts.

He got his first quote today, and it was for a Goodman SSX16036 condenser and AEPF air handler. Alternatively, he was told that the Lenox was nearly $4,000 more than the Goodman. Is it worth it to get the Lenox, both in terms of performance as well as long term maintenance/repair. Is the Goodman a good, quality, reliable brand? And if so, any thought about the condenser and air handler that was quoted for his 1,500 sq ft house?

Many thanks for your recommendations and insight!

Has the dealer done a Manual-J on the home?

3 tons for a 1,500 sq ft home seems a tad bit big!

I would get a dealer who will do a Manual-J (Load calc) on his home. I have a 1,700 sq ft home, and right now I have 2 tons, but it was sized to the old windows, now I could use 1.5 ton.

Goodman can be a good unit if installed correct and the right way.

I had a 3 ton Janitrol (made by Goodman) as original in a new 2100 SF ranch. I replaced it this year ( 14 years later) as the condenser developed an internal short.

Had a 13 SEER 3 ton Trane put in for under $4000. I would check with other HVAC contractors.
