Any way to adapt to remote use?

My mother moved into senior housing and they have a room size air conditioner mounted in the wall. Unfortunately the unit is very high up (high ceilings) and the unit doesn't have a remote. There's no way to adjust the settings or even turn it on or off without climbing on a chair - which just isn't safe. Any ideas on how to help her use this? I was thinking maybe we could set the temp then plug it in to some sort of timer, etc.
Thoughts?
Many thanks!
Linda

Unfortunately, that's not a possibility. It's a design flaw....and every resident is in the same mess. I'm just looking for any helpful advice that anyone has.

Thanks
