Dead gnats coming out of portable air conditioner

I've had a portable air conditioner for 6 years now (the standup kind where it has 2 tubes coming out of the back that attach to the window).

I have it right next to the bed, and this year is the first year I'm seeing dead gnats on my bed right next to the air conditioner. I've also seen dead gnats stuck to the vent where the air comes out.

I checked the drain plug at the bottom of the unit, and no water came out. Do you think it might be mold or fungus inside the unit? I took a flashlight and looked into the vent, and there's a cylinder with "fins" inside that rotates. The fins all have some gray stuff on them on one side, and nothing on the other side. I don't know if the gray stuff is mold or just dust. I can tell you that I don't really smell any odor coming from it.

Your "finned cylinder" is the impeller of the centrifugal fan that brings in the outside air to cool the condenser. I suggest that you remove the outer casing of the unit and do a thorough job cleaning everything.
