AC not keeping up

My central AC unit (installed 2003) works fine for the most part except when it is hotter and more humid than usual (Southern California). It will run for awhile with cool air but later on in the evening it will have the condenser running outside but the air inside will barely be flowing. I can stand by a vent and there will be little air movement. Is there some sort of short term blockage? Thanks

Thumbs up Welcome to our forums!

If the air flow starts out being good and then later tapering off I would look for the evaporator coil possibly freezing up.
The evaporator coil is in the furnace and there are a few things that could cause it to ice up.

Dirty filters or coil surface, inadequate air flow and low refrigerant level are all possibilities.
There should be a way to get to the coil to check on its condition.
If you have an A coil the dirt would accumulate on the inside portion of the A.
You may have to either look underneath the coil or remove a cover on the end of the coil to check it properly.
