Outside fan stuck on/icing

Goodman clj36 1a - The outside (condensor?) fan is not shutting off and was iced up around the in/out lines. I shut it off with the breaker, let it thaw. When I reset the breaker it stayed off with the tstat off. Turned on at t stat, the system came on but outside fan again did not shut off when temp was reached nor when I turned off at tstat.

I think I'll replace the thermostat and hope for the best, but from the little I've gathered here that doesn't sound like the problem.

I changed the filter.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like more than one problem. Low refrigerant or airflow blockage would explain the icing. Thermostat or stuck contactor would explain the system staying on. If you could test for 24 v at the contactor when the unit stays on and the tstat is not calling for cooling.

Thanks for the reply Broods. I replace the thermostat and it seems to be working properly. I guess I should have tried that before posting.

If it's a problem again I'll be back. This site is a big help.
