AC is not shutting off

I live in Texas and no need to say how hot it is here. But i have had my thermostat set on 80 degrees and it will not shut off. I'm wondering if it is because it's so hot outside or is there a bigger problem. The thermostat has read 80 degrees all day but it has not shut off. I can bump it up a degree and it will turn off. Any help or suggestions?

best to have the unit cleaned and serviced to find out. Check your split temps as stated, but try cleaning the coils, checking for plugged filter.
