ohming single and three phase compressor.

i am an hvac student and would like to find out the possible best ways of ohming both single and three phase compressors. thanks.

i usually go right to the terminals on the compressor itself. disconnect and mark your wiring. single phase from S to R will be your highest reading. S to C will be second, and R to C will be your lowest. S to C and R to C should equal S to R. 3 phase ohms will all read the same, make sure you put your wires back on the correct terminals for a 3 phase compressor to get the correct rotation. if you have incorrect rotation, it will not pump and you will notice a difference in the noise. simply switch 2 leads to correct the issue if this happens.

scroll compressors are critical on direction any other doesn't matter single phase or 3 phase.....any reading from terminal to copper pipe or compressor casing (unpainted) the compressor is shot no matter what the ohms read like holding the leads together.tech tip if the outside temps are chilly cold compressor oil can give a grounded reading to ground...
