lenox HS 18 air conditioner

My A/C compressor will not stay on, contactor does energize and fan comes on but no compressor, I jumped wires and the compressor kicked in but appears to run for a very short time and the compressor drops out, any ideas?

Does the compressor sound normal when it runs or just hum?

There are three possibilities:

1. Run capacitor is bad
2. One of the compressor motor windings has failed
3. The compressor is stuck or has mechanically failed

A good tech should be able to easily rule out the capacitor and check the windings.

If the compressor is physically stuck (rule out capacitor and windings), a hard start kit can be installed to try and get it going.

If the compressor won't start with a good run capacitor and hard start kit, the a/c will have to be replaced. (including the evaporator coil)

The HS18 is an old unit so it doesn't make sense to put more than a couple hundred dollars into it.
