Noiisy Intake

Hello - looking for some ideas/ suggestions. My downstair handler produces a lot of noise. It is located in second floor closet, and below is the grill (first floor ceiling). Some of the specs:
  • 2003 3 ton unit for 1500-1600 sq feet
  • the grill filter is 18 x 36
  • from the grill to the bottom of handler, about 40 inches
  • about 14 inches up from grill, the opening reduces to 18 x 20, which is the size of the handler opening
  • there is also, and not sure how to explain, a side pocket on one side. The pocket extends a couple feet parallel to the ceiling and approx 2 ft high - prob 6-8 cubic feet pocket.
  • the entire space is lined with fiberglass insulation
I assume I need to add an intake to reduce the air noise. However wonder if the opening getting bigger, or that side pocket may be a cause for noise. Thank you, Tom

You need to add another return with some length to it. Most of your problem is that there is not enough distance of duct work and you have too much velocity at the return air grill.

Thank you HvactechFW.

do you suppose that pocket was the beginning of another return? If not, any idea why it is there?

Regards,
