ac unit will not turn on outside

Last year the AC stopped working last year but the heat was fine. This year replaced the motor run capacitor and still not working, just hearing a click when the thermostat is turned on. I pushed in the contactor when the unit was on and a spark flew, but it sounded like the compressor turned on and the fan moved a little. I pushed the button again, same thing happened. I pushed it the third time, nothing happened. Does the contactor need to be replaced?

if the contactor is not pulling in on its own then you need to find out what control (pressure switch or time delay) is causing it to not pull in or it may have a low voltage wiring problem.

what would cause the contactor to spark when pressing the button. I pressed it twice quickly with the spark coming from the button area. Then the third time nothing

A power arc will cause it to spark. Normal.
