My thermostat melted down

I got up and turned on my air conditioner like I do everyday and it didnt come on. Found out it blew the fuse. So I replaced the fuse and turned it on and my thermostat started smoking. Turned it off. It melted down my thermostat. I dont know how to troubleshoot what the problem could be so I need help. This is an old unit. It is an air conditioner/heater but the heater part does not get used. I cant see a name on it but the model number is 7655856. On the blower motor it reads, 900759 Heating/Cooling Blower Motor. and It just says air conditioning inc. Under that. Im hoping I can get some good advice here. Thanks

My thermostat is a Honeywelll digital RTH110B and its a 4 wire.

I've seen a thermostat melt when 240 volts is shorted to the 24 volt circuit.
Probably need to call a pro.

So that would mean the transformer went bad, right? Can you tell me how to test it?

it may mean that wires shorted in the a/c I would start by looking there.
