Can a bad contactor cause the AC to blow lukewarm?

I have a Carrier 38en036340 ac. Lately the compressor hasn't been shutting off. I checked the contactor and the center button contacts are blackened with carbon and there are scorch marks on it. It also gets very hot very fast. The compressor still comes on when it should but the air from the vents is not very cool. The filters are new, the 3-pole capacitor is new. The a-coil is clean.

Can a bad contactor cause the warm airflow? I've already ordered a new one but it would be nice to get a break from the 100 heat until then.

Answered my own question.

According to a troubleshooting site I found the bad contactor can cause warm air flow.

Sounds like your comp could be on the way out. I dunno whether a low charge can cause issues with the comp pulling more amps or not....but current draw and pressures need to be checked by a Pro.

I'd like to see a link to that site. I guess maybe if the coil is freezing up....but that normally reduces airflow greatly.

Was the outside fan staying on as well?
