Add registers and return air to unfinished basement

1200 soft unfinished basement, gas furnace in basement, 2 air registers one at each end of run. Going to slowly refinish basement and want to make warmer first.

I want to and some registers but wanted to know if I can add a return air grill. Concerned about return air sucking in exhaust from gas furnace. Can I do if the return is far enough away from furnace??

You don't want to create a low pressure situation to cause exhaust gasses to creep back into your home, as you are aware. If you installed the return without adding vents, from where would the extra air come to feed that return?

Or, are you asking if you can install a return along with the extra vents? That would be ok if the area of the vents matched or exceeded the area of the return.

Yes I will be adding more vents. Currently there are 2. At each end of the run. I would add probably at least 3 more.
And I would put the return near the floor along a wall.
