NEST 2.0 issues

I'm having issues (again) with my Nest thermostat. When the head is removed from the wall, but wires all still connected with the base plate, my ac is getting a signal to keep sending coolant through the air handler radiators. With no airflow, this causes ice to form, and then when the unit is turned back on, the ice to make loud cracking noises as it breaks apart and drips on my carpet. The first time this happened, I contacted Nest and they sent me a new unit. It is happening again though...
Is there something I can do with the wiring to make this stop? I like the nest, but don't want to pay for another AC tech visit.

The solution is to get a better thermostat than the nest. A time tested and correctly functioning thermostat from Honeywell or Ecobee.

Could also be a shorted wire or stuck contactor. Does the outside unit continue to run after you pull the wire out of the Y connector?

Possible that the load is too high for the Nest and is shorting it out?
