Lennox G40UH(X) - Fan/Blower Noise - Won't Cool House
Have a 5-year old Lennox G40UH(X) and just turned on the AC for the season a few days ago. It cooled the house right down but after a few days it was not keeping up with the outside temp (88 deg) and would only get down to about 73.
Tonight I turned it off because the temp dropped outside anyway. But I left the fan on to circulate the air. After a few hours I began to hear a loud whining noise and turned off the fan and the noise stopped immediately.
I am assuming I have a bad fan and/or fan motor. Does that sound right?
If so, is that something a handy fellow can repair or do I need to call in the repair tech?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!!

It certainly wouldn't hurt to take a look at the situation.
Turn the power off to the air handler. Remove blower access cover. Try turning the blower by hand.

thanks PJmax...I turned power off...removed cover...carefully reached in and the fan spins smoothly...left the cover off and turned on the fan and the noise is definitely coming from the fan and/or fan motor

Ok....so what happens when you turn the fan on ? Loud hum/growl ?
Motor tries to spin....maybe a little and doesn't.
You may just have a defective start capacitor. It's usually in the blower compartment area. Usually a silver cylinder with two wiring tabs. That's where I would start.
