Repetitive clicking from thermostat before compressor (fan ok)

Happy Memorial Day all & thanks to those that are & have served, and sincerest thanks to those who have been called to serve and sacrifice for the country!

Noticed my thermostat blank today, so after some time, traced the culprit to the air handler unit - blown 5A fuse. Replaced that & the thermostat LCD was visible again.

Cut the temp down & the unit engaged, however a repetitive clicking occurred & wouldn't let the outside fan come on. The fan on the air handler works fine... its only when trying to cool that it clicks repetitively (once a second or so) and then disengages.

My assumption is that the repetitive cycling to try to get the outdoor unit to come on is what blew the fuse.

I swapped thermostats, to rule that out & the same issue happens.

For any seasoned AC experts out there, does this narrow things down to the likely cause?

Thanks in advance!

to anyone with the same issue, I found the culprit... took the cover & fan out of the outdoor unit, found a wire near the bottom that had been touching the copper tube & burned through the insulation causing a short.

Cheers

Glad you got it figured out as it sounded like a intermittent short to me.
