Condesner fan motor dosen't come on and 10 15 seconds trips breaker

Hi I'm looking for some advice on my problem.

I have a 6 or 7 year old Goodman 5 ton 13 seer condenser. The previous unit blew due to 12 gauge wire, tech told me to go to 8. Run is about 33 feet from the panel.

So the problem is that when the ac comes on the breaker blows. The blower works fine. I can hear when the thermostat clicks in and hums in the condenser unit. The fan blade spins freely. So when the thermostat kicks in I hear a hum and the blades don't spin then the breaker blows. It's a scroll compressor. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forums.

The condensor fan spins freely when pushed with something but won't start when compressor runs.

That sounds like a starting capacitor issue.

The model number of your outside unit would be most helpful.

it does sound like a capacitor issue. They are inexpensive, I would replace it. A meter to test the current capacitor is much more expensive than the capacitor itself.

Thanks for your help, $32.00 for a capacitor did the trick.
